Giambologna was a sculptor who became famous for his bronze and marble statues that he designed and shaped following the principles of the late Renaissance style. One of his most extraordinary creations is the majestic Appennine Colossus, which can be found within the gardens of the former Villa Medici in Pratolino, just 7 miles away from Florence, Italy
The remains of the Villa di Pratolino are now included in the Villa Demidoff, which can be reached easily by following the road towards Bologna. The Appennine Colossus measures 35 feet in height, and it is definitely one of the most impressive attractions of the villa’s gardens. The sculpture was meant to represent the figure of Atlas – a primordial titan who is usually depicted holding a giant celestial sphere (the Earth) on its back. In this particular representation, the colossus is actually pushing down the head of a beast, which in turn spews out water from its mouth into a pond below.
