Name Day Tradition in Italy

Name Day Tradition in Italy

Name Day or onomastico as it is called in Italy, is a tradition that celebrates the day of the year of a given name. The day is fixed according to the Roman Catholic Saints calendar which celebrates the feast day of the particular saint. Each day celebrates one or more names and sometimes, some names can be celebrated on more than one day.

Onomastico is similar to a birthday in Italy and quite often, people receive small gifts on their name day. If you want to wish someone a happy name day, you can say Buon Onomastico!
