Christmas time in Florence

Christmas time in Florence is always a magical time of year.  By mid-November, stunning Christmas lights are up throughout the city and trees are put up in the major piazzas.

Christmas markets are held throughout Italy with lots of mulled wine and sweet treats to enjoy. The famous German market in Piazza Santa Croce is a holiday staple in Florence where tons of people gather to enjoy the holiday spirit.

Obviously with Covid-19, the holiday season looks quite different for all no matter where you are.  Here in Italy, Christmas markets have been cancelled and currently in Florence, we are a red zone which means a strict lockdown only to be out for necessities.

With that being said, despite Covid-19, Florence has continued its tradition of putting up stunning Christmas decorations to lift the spirits of the community.  Although we currently can’t wander the streets to enjoy them, we see photos online and hope the restrictions will soon be lessened for us to see them in person.

The below video is from Christmas 2019 and a wonderful memory of how Christmas time is normally celebrated in Florence. It will happen again….
